Dine: Best in DC in VA

I had almost given up on dining in DC... how does such a diverse city with restaurants peppering the streets continue to serve up such mediocrity? Perhaps living in Seattle has spoiled me completely with fresh ingredients, ripe produce, and phenomenal wine selections. Perhaps I am simply suited for a Pacific Northwest palate.

In the Pacific Northwest, we are spoiled with culinary riches... from fresh, local and ripe organic produce to droves of freshly caught Pacific seafood. Then there is Washington wine country – no longer an up-and-comer, but a powerhouse in the world of wine. The talent of chefs, cooks, sommeliers, and "foodies" in the region is astronomical. And there is no doubt that this talent must exist in DC … I just haven’t seen it yet.

I have been craving one restaurant memorable enough to shout, "I am definitely coming back here!"

...Then it was yesterday. A friend (and native Pac North-Westerner) and I decided to head into Alexandria, VA, to have a girl’s day out. We walked to the waterfront, sat for a drink and an app and left. Not ten steps into shopping, we peered into a window that was lined with ice-oysters. And since moments ago we were complaining about the ridiculous price of oysters, we had to pop in... Into what became my best dining experience since I my arrival.

At the Raw Bar facing King Street, we noshed on Alaskan King Crab Legs – 12.50 for ½ pound… To DIE! Individual oysters? Yup, they thought we were weirdo's, but we like to try one at a time. And then came two spiced shrimp… only two because they were a gift from the magic oyster shucker. Spiced with white peppercorns, nutmeg and some other unidentifiable herbs and spices. Spiced delight.

Fillipe (perhaps spelled incorrectly, but he didn’t wear a name tag) sat behind the raw bar and served up outstandingly fresh and delicious seafood. Our server came behind us with white wine and a sincere grin complementing the meal and the experience perfectly.

We left happy. We left screaming, (not really screaming because we are ladies,) "we are definitely coming back here!" Although it is technically in Virginia, so far - it is the best of DC dining!

By the way, the restaurant is called the Fish Market on King Street in Old Town Alexandria.
