How to apply:

Dip your eyeshadow brush in water and dry with a piece of toilet paper, dip in shadow and apply.
The key is to not have a brush that is too wet. (If the brush is too wet, the shadow will clump and apply unevenly.)

In need of recharging after exhausting, endless days gazing blindly into a computer screen, some travel to lands afar seeking wellness at the hands of ancient healing masters. The artists carefully clean their camera lenses, artfully sharpen their charcoal pencils, grasp the Moleskine by its binding, and wander abroad to gather and re-inspire our imagination. Captivated by the mystery of culture shock, we file in with others in a place that shakes the core of our comfort zone. We prepare, we plan, we dream of each adventure.

There is a certain health that comes with the inherent desire to wander through the world’s mysterious lands. Travelers are secretly controlled by the hand of adventure, to us, it predicates normality. Travel is food, and food is fuel. We become mindful, our hearts gauge warmth, and we are reacquainted with our true selves.

Most of us can attest that wandering foreign streets heals our physical bodies as well. Eating foods we cannot pronounce, with ingredients we have never heard of, invigorated from the flavors of the world. It's been a difficult month... difficult to concentrate and even more tricky to sit still - like every October. October is my birthday month. But more importantly it is the end of the summer, the beginning of autumn equinox, the beginning of cool weather motivation, Halloween, football season, the World Series, Breast Cancer Awareness Month... We are not meant to be chained to our computer in such a riveting block of days. So, to repair of my lack of delivery over the last thirty or so days, I am recapping my month with a new section: Month in Review | October 2009

Book that's rocking my world: SWAY - The Irresistable Pull of Irrational Behavior.

Court: Not legal, not royal... racquetball! Yes, it's kind of eighties, but its making me sweat four nights a week and now that I am thirty I best keep my booty in shape.

iPhone app that has changed my musical life: Shazam. Push a couple of buttons and Shazam will actually hear the music that is playing where you are and most of the time will report back the artist, the album, and provide you a button to buy it. Seriously? I have been waiting my entire life for this app.

Greenfest! The year's ultimate tradeshow for the eco-aware. Pangea Organics (one of the festival sponsors) had samples, a lip-balm counting contest and much more... they give an impressive spiel - young, fun and modern. The country's best causes and enviro-interests were represented with flare. My favorite items included the Organic Wine Garden (which shockingly no wine company sponsored) and the The Revolution Rickshaw. The Ancient Art of Henna

The henna plant (lawsonia inermis) contains medicinal properties that are said to cool the body. For 5,000 years, henna has been an integral component of marking celebrations in ancient cultures. It is said that the elaborate markings of henna began in the African deserts. The medicinal plant was crushed into a paste and applied to the entire foot and hands to keep body temperature low. Tired of having bright red palms, the women would place one large dot in the center of the palms (providing the same effect) but offering a more attractive appearance.

In Moroccan villages, henna was historically applied to provide “Baraka,” a barrier which guarded from “the Evil Eye,” which was believed to bring misfortune to the village. In Africa, the Middle East and South East Asia, henna has many purposes stemming from ritual, religion and preservation of tradition.

Current Uses
One of the most famous practices still occurs in Morocco. The “Night of Henna,” is a familial ceremony to prepare the bride for consummation. It is intended to offer the bride the womanly wisdom of both her mother, and her husband’s mother. The ceremony marks the transition of daughter in her father’s house, to wife in her husband’s house.

Depicted in ancient art, you will see henna decoration on queens and goddesses as well as depicted celebrations and ceremonies such as animal sacrifice, circumcision, and marriage. Henna has been used for thousands of years to tell thousands of stories.

Inside Traditional Moroccan Hammam's

What it is:

Once a week, Moroccans gather at communal bath houses to engage in a traditional full-body cleansing. A Hammam (or public bath), is a time-honored cleansing ritual practiced Eastern Europe, northern Africa and the Middle East.

Traditional Hammam services begin with relaxation in a large steam room to open the pores. Then you are covered with a coat of olive oil product which is followed by the “gommage,” another name for a full-body exfoliation. A heavy clay mask follows to release impurities followed with cold cloth mask removal to close pores. To complete the cleansing, you are given a full body massage.

Sounds luxurious? It could be. A Hammam service at a spa will provide a luxurious experience. So if you are a germ-a-phobe, ultra sensitive to modesty or sanitation, spend a bit extra and take it to the spa.

Otherwise, the traditional communal bath houses that are frequented by locals provide an authentic experience. You will be surrounded by dead skin cells flowing across the floor, strangers scrubbing themselves in their skivvies, etc. The ceilings are pierced with small holes to allow in natural light, the walls permeate with steam from a wooded fire, the floors are crawling with gossiping locals, screaming children, and people lined upon the walls. Do not expect a serene experience. But once you make it through - the skin you will leave in will be the softest skin of your adult life.

Where it is:

Common in all neighborhoods of Marrakech, Morocco, these bath houses may be difficult for westerners to find because they are labeled in Arabic. Look for squalls of people entering a public house with bathing tools.

Dress:

These bathhouses are not usually attended in the nude (with the exception of children) - undergarments are typically worn. As in keeping with the modesty of that region, skimpy under-things are frowned upon. Women always cover wet hair upon leaving.

Sanitation:

It is likely that your exfoliation will not be performed with new (or even sanitized) exfoliating glove, so either bring your own or go to a spa that performs the authentic service with sanitary accoutrements. Stop by the souk, pick up a small rinsing dish, “black soap,” a kiis (exfoliating glove,) and a mat to sit on. This is a full bathing experience, so bring your other products and grooming supplies.

Cautions:

Be prepared to exercise respect and mindfulness to their actions while you partake in their ritual.

Know when to rinse. Watch those around you.
Brace yourself for the exfoliation, this is a heavy duty scrub that you have likely never experienced.
Watch the water flow before choosing an area to seat – you could possibly land yourself in the direct flow of drainage.
Taking more than two buckets of water in considered greedy.
If you splash those around you with cold water, prepare to get a mouthful.

Harmful Beauty Ingredients

Anti-bacterial's
Used too often, anti-bacterial ingredients can counteract resistance of disease-causing germs like E. coli and Salmonella.

Coal Tar
Often found in toothpaste, dandruff shampoos and anti-itch creams, coal tar is a carcinogen and leads to various types of cancers.

Diethanolamine (DEA) drains the body of choline, a mineral vital to fetal brain development.

Formaldehyde
This toxic additive has extremely dangerous health effects including weakened immune-system, decreased respiratory function and cancer. Look for the following ingredients to avoid: diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea and quaternium compounds. Surprisingly, formaldehyde can still be found in hair-dyes, baby cleansing products, lash adhesive and other personal care items.

Synthetic Fragrances
If you see the ingredient fragrance, steer clear. Typically added to mask phthalates, fragrances may cause reproductive difficulties and obesity. Enjoy fragrant products? Lead and Mercury
Trace amounts of lead will make its way into your system whether you like it or not. However, you can do your part to minimize the levels that make it into your bloodstream by reading the ingredients of your daily care products carefully. Lead exposure is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and infants, stunting development. Mercury is often used as a preservative – it also damages your brain function. Labeled as thimerosol, this can still be found in some mascaras.

Nanoparticles
Small nanoparticles, which (according to research) may damage brain cells, is common in many sunscreens. Look for products that provide particles larger than 100 nanometers. (The larger the particle, the more difficulty it will have reaching your blood stream.)

Parabens
This is one of the most commonly used preservatives because it increases shelf life a great deal – this is why parabens are still found in millions of health and beauty products. Studies have shown that parabens decrease sperm count, as well as produce estrogenic activity found in human breast-cancer cell cultures. A controversial subject and one worthy of looking into – or avoiding all together. Look for the prefix: methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butyl-, isobutyl-.

P-Phenylenediamine
Often found in permanent hair color, this chemical damages the nervous system, as well as causing lung irritation and severe allergic reactions. It's may be listed as 1,4-Benzenediamine; p-Phenyldiamine and 4-Phenylenediamine.

Perfect Purses - from the Bos Art Opera Collection

I recently walked into a small gallery while on vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine... mindlessly awaiting a table at a favorite brunch spot nearby (Jeannie's Breakfast.) As a fine art major, I am typically drawn to the works on the wall instead of the baubles and accessories adorning corner stacked bookcases. But when a work is so beautiful, it becomes your main focus - it calls out to you, and you must walk right up to it. And I did... and I found the perfect purse. The reasons for this entry are three-fold: 1. Reminiscence of economical Nirvana 2. To plug my favorite radio station 3. To announce a killer contest that will head you up to Iceland to enhance your musical soul. Groovy.

It is no secret that Seattle is home to some of the best bands and most influential genres in music. And when I am outside of America and I tell people that I come from Seattle, they attribute the Emerald City to Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain instead of to rain, Starbucks, Microsoft, and Boeing. I, in fact, saw Kurt Cobain play a 5$ show at the Redmond Brick House when I was just a baby (13)... that show actually turned my ear to modern music after years in a choir robe.

Now that I have moved on from my beloved Seattle to another great music city (Washington DC), I feel fortunate to still have the innovative sounds that KEXP plucks from studios and sidewalks worldwide, streaming through my computer. No messy commercials and jarring idiots screaming at you in between the five songs that they play per hour. No drama. Just Music. Rad Music. Obviously there are a couple of dud songs here and there, but that is the beauty - they really get dirty and scour the world for music that NOBODY ELSE PLAYS. Lucky us.

KEXP, now partnered with Radio New York, brings the best live streams of radio featuring local and national and global... and what got me into KEXP was that they are listener powered - meaning, that listeners make donations in true COOP style. The region is so fanatic about the station that their pledge drives (occurring four times per year) always reach their goals, and people are literally shrieking with joy when they call in to share their money with this amazing organization.

If this station goes under, we will all be sorry. If you listen for only one day, and truly love music, you will be hooked. And being hooked means making a small donation. Extend your summer glow

There are many simple ways to keep your summer glow well into the fall season. Don’t spend time and money damaging your skin at a tanning salon, when you can achieve the same look at home, healthily.

Day Glow Moisturizers – This subtle color enhancing moisturizer contains the same active ingredient (DHA*) as sunless tanner but is more subtle. Avoid streaking as you would with sunless tanner and allow about one day to develop.

Sunless Tanners – Containing a higher concentration of *DHA than day glow moisturizers, the results are more quickly noticeable. Apply evenly, in a circular motion and wash from areas such as cuticles and hairlines.

Bronzing Powder – The trick with bronzers is to apply it only where the sun would hit your face - the T-zone, the tip of the nose, and the apples of the cheeks.

*DHA (dihydroxyacetone) causes a natural change in the surface layers of skin, and is perfectly safe.

Both products are scented with Ylang Ylang and Vanilla which creates a feminine but exotic scent- in the shower and afterwards. Welcome Back, Hypercolor!

I recently walked up to a stranger, and before offering a greeting of any sort, I exclaimed with utter fascination (and a quickly dropped chin,) "Is that a Hypercolor T-shirt?!" It was. I was ecstatic, and by the look of the same cheeky grin on his face, I could tell he was happy too that someone recognized his excellent taste and successful attempt at what I call, era-style-revival.

For this child of the 80's, the Hypercolor fad has been on my mind, as I have been daydreaming about finding a mit-condition version from the eighties with the graffiti text to frame and hang on my wall (I am the nostalgic type.) But since wearing the T-shirt even once can cause color damage, that isn't a likely quest. In case you don't know what the dang-rickey I am talking about, when heat (from breath, sweat, etc.) penetrates the fiber of this material, it changes color (hence the name, Hypercolor) eventually becoming permanent.

So, it probably won't hang on my wall in a Plasticine frame, but it is on the way to my closet - for only $28 bucks at American Apparel.

Hydrate-Heal body wash is a sudsy body wash packed vanilla and blood orange. It really perked up by senses while I scrub-a-dub-dubbed. In addition to getting you clean, this body wash is 71% organic, has no parabens, no synthetic fragrances, is vegan, and it’s cruelty free!

Soften-Soothe body lotion has the same invigorating vanilla and blood orange mix. The scent lingered on my skin enough for those close to me to notice the yummy scent. It does a great job of being a light lotion but still packing a punch of moisture- meaning I was able to use it here in humid Florida without breaking a sweat. Some heavy lotions, or those that don’t truly sink into your skin, just feel like they clog my skin. Not good when it’s 80%+ humidity out.

I really love some of the ingredients in this lotion- Witch Hazel to help keep your entire body toned, lots of natural moisturizers (Vitamin E, Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil, and more), Neem Oil (which according to all the press this oil is getting, must have mystical qualities, hee!).

Anyhow, like it’s sister product, Soften-Soothe lotion is paraben free, cruelty certified vegan, has no synthetic fragrances. This lotion contains 89% organic content!

Keep your Makeup Brushes (and Your Skin) Clean

One sure way to clog your pores with bacteria is using unsanitary makeup brushes. Washing your face twice daily, using excellent skin care products, wearing sunscreen, drinking lots of water – these are all steps to take towards more radiant skin. But with every day that we apply makeup, we create a nesting ground in our brushes for microbes and germs.

So rather than stressing about it, just start a new habit of washing your makeup brushes often.

Beauty professionals use a sterile solution to clean their brushes - these products can be found at department stores and/or beauty supply stores.

If you prefer to use products you already have at home, use facial cleanser or shampoo according to your preference. They both have the power to thoroughly clean your brushes and are free of irritants.

1. Moisten brushes thoroughly under warm running water.
2. Put enough shampoo or cleanser into palm of hand to completely cover brush,
then move in a circular motion to loosen makeup particles.

This summer (2009) at famed Centre Pompidou in the 4th arrondissement in Paris, the walls will be lined with rare manuscripts, abstract paintings of various mediums, and original sketches by the evolutionary Russian abstract painter, Wassily Kandinsky. More than one hundred inflections into the "Founder of Abstraction"... and my personal favorite artist of bold, intense, and thoughtful color, geometric and linear compositions, his deep introspection into theorizing the inner beauty in a tangible form. Kandinsky was not only an artist that influenced many styles, but the founder and president of Neue Künstlervereinigung München (New Artists' Association). He was a true visionary with professionalism to boot.

In 1934, Kandinsky moved to Paris and painted there for the remainder of his days... and 73 years later, the City of Lights is honored to welcome him once again.

How far would you go for beauty? Would you let an expert work bird poop into your pores... or dunk your feet into a pool of flesh eating fish? Okay, so this sounds a bit absurd and almost morbid, but when professionals of beauty charge high prices for obscure treatments, fanatics of the newest trends go running. We count on professionals to introduce treatments that are both beneficial and safe, so there must be some reason for the fish pedicure and geisha facial - reasons explored below.
Note: these are not for the unadventurous spirit.

The Geisha Facial

Uguisu no fun (nightingale droppings) has been used for centuries by Japanese Geisha's and Kabuki actors to cleanse the face of heavy stage makeup while replenishing it with moisture. The active ingredient in uquisu no fun is guanine, a nucleobase and amino acid that adheres to skin layers and creates a reflective glow. Guanine is often used in a powdered dust form to add shimmer to beauty products. The scent is neutralized and the droppings sterilized, so sit back, relax, and see what mid-town Manhattan has been raving about for the past year. Spa owner Shizuka Bernstein: "I'm always trying to bring Japanese culture to my spa... I heard my mother talk about this treatment when I was a little girl." (Reuters)

IMO, the Japanese know a thing or two about health and beauty - judging from the obscene amounts of green tea and sashimi that body and beauty aware people drown in daily... and that Okinawa has the world's longest life expectancy. So I'll take Shizuka's word for it and go for a Geisha facial the next time I am in NYC.

The Fish Pedicure

This is a somewhat controversial treatment, marked illegal in my home state of Washington due to sanitary concerns. But a stones throw from my new home on the east coast, lives the first nail spa to offer the fish pedicure in the United States.

The "nibble-fish" is called garra rufa and is a tiny toothless carp that feasts on dead skin. It is said to relieve symptoms of psoriasis, remove bacteria and promote mineral absorption into the pores, and some even say, cure non-skin related diseases.*

It began in Turkey in the 14th century when two brothers sat amongst the nibble fish in a natural hot spring. When word spread that it had cured skin ailments after just one bath, locals enlisted hot springs as an anecdote for many ailments. Turkey attracts millions of tourists annually in search of time-honored rejuvenating treatments. And because these fish are protected by the Turkish government, you will likely be able to find an oasis to dip your tootsies into... but due to popularity of the hot springs, don't expect solitude. If travel to Turkey is not on your agenda, look for a spa offering a fish pedicure in your area. Word is spreading, but the odd-duck fish pedicure is still rare in the US.

The Art of the Wine Label - Mouton Rothschilde

One of the most sought after, prized, collected, and prolific wine brands of all time is Mouton Rothschild. The long-standing tradition of the quality of the wine was surpassed only by the early marketing techniques applied to the brand by the founder’s predecessor, Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

In the 1920’s, marketing wines with beautiful labels was one of many ambitious moves by Philippe de Rothschild to propel and modernize his winery. Philippe enlisted important artists of the time to create original designs to enhance the marketing ability of the wines. This became a permanent practice of the winery in 1946, and the tradition has only been broken a couple of times since for special commemorations.

In 1993, French painter Balthus Klossowski de Rola was commissioned to submit original art for the label - a design of his choosing. He created a line drawing of a nude woman. His art was rejected for distribution in the United States, so Philippe put out the vintage with a blank label honoring Balthus’ work – a notable snub to conservative US importing laws, and an immediate value driver to collectors.

Some well known artists who have designed for Mouton include: Warhol, Picasso, Dali, Braque, Kandinsky, and Chagall.
